Today, America pauses in remembrance of our heroes - our veterans:
every man and woman who ever served in harm's way
so the rest of us could have the good life.
These people do not get headaches or call in sick.
They go and do as ordered and some do not come back.
One is one too many.
More than four hundred thousand died in WW II.
More than a million, all told, including the tragic Civil War.
There are no words to adequately express our feelings for the war dead.
What would we say to those who died to keep us free?
I weep when I think, even for an instant, of so many who would die tonight
so I can wake up safe in the morning. That is the purest love.
Today is for remembering and loving and honoring the memory of those
who served, especially those who lost all their tomorrows.
As for me, the able bodied of my hometown served in our beloved
Company L of the National Guard.
Such units all over Maryland & Virginia were part the
29th Division, US Army.
They were on Omaha Beach on D-Day
Omar Bradley said "Every man on Omaha was a hero".
Indeed, Bedford VA sustained the highest per capita loss of life in WW II.
[More than 20 killed in 15 minutes on Omaha]
[Not coincidentaly, the National D-Day Memorial is in Bedford]
My father's friends and my friends' fathers bought and paid for my freedom
with service, heroism, wounds and their very lives on Omaha Beach.
Each of us, just as the signers of the Declaration of Independence,
pledges our life, our fortune and our sacred honor.
That is the deal!
The few have to meet the pledge for the many to live our birthright.
Today, the throngs of the latter remember and pause to honor those precious few of the former.
Faced with a moment of truth, as in 9/11, we all would meet the pledge, if need be.
In remembering, be doubly thankful only the few had to.
They will be remembered until
lovers cease to dream and rivers run upstream and
the mountains are carried into the sea.

I only know I swell'd with pride and deep within my breast,
I thrill'd to see Old Glory paint the breeze.
